Cohort 7

Kayla Hill

Master of Applied Science in Geospatial Information Technology

Clinton, MS

Kayla believes she is where she is needed and her life is made whole by serving others.

Kayla was born and raised in Jackson Mississippi. She attended Jackson State University and graduated in 2018. Kayla joined Teach for America in 2018 and was assigned to her hometown, Jackson Mississippi. During her commitment to TFA, she was assigned to teach at the elementary school she attended. Kayla teaches 5th grade science and she even replaced the science teacher that taught at the school, when she attended.

Kayla is passionate about sparking the minds of young scientists. Most scholars who come through her classroom are scared of science or not interested in the subject. Her hands-on approach leaves scholars wowed and many will consider entering the field in the near future. She serves as a reminder to scholars. She comes looking like them, with similar background, and upbringing. She is a product of the same school district as them. She is proof that one can use their life events as motivation, not as a crutch or excuse.

Her goal is to prove what's possible for kids.

Fun fact: She loves thrift shopping on weekends. The thrill of possibly finding a hidden treasure makes it worth the search for her.

Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.
