AK Suggs Horlock

Doctor of Education in Professional Studies

Madison, MS

AK was born and raised outside of Houston, Texas where she developed a love for school and sports. After graduating with honors from the University of Mississippi, she began her journey in education in the Mississippi Delta with Teach For America. During her four years in Marks, Mississippi, she taught high school Spanish, English, English Remediation, and Oral Communication. She also coached volleyball, cross-country, and track/field. She says the highlight of her time in the Delta was when their track team won the Mississippi North State Championship— one of the best days of her life.

In 2019, she received her master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration. She moved to Houston, Texas, and began working as a Literacy Specialist at Yes Prep North Forest High School. In this role, she worked with Tier III students, English Language Learners, students with 504 plans, and dyslexic students. She also created and established the school’s tier process. She then transitioned into the role of High School Dean of Students.

Today, she serves as a Literacy/Instructional Specialist at Ridgeland High School. She is currently an EdD candidate at Delta State University where she is also a part of the TFA Graduate Fellowship for the second time. Her Social Entrepreneurship project, Rising Warriors, aims to provide leadership opportunities and training to young adults and students in Mississippi, specifically students who are at risk of dropping out of high school.

AK's passion is helping students see the best in themselves and realize their full potential. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, exercising, and spending time with family and friends. AK and her husband Greg welcomed their first son, Jake, in September 2023.
