William David Murphy is a devoted husband, father, son, and friend whose life and leadership are deeply rooted in his faith in Jesus Christ. His commitment to living out these values fuels his urgent pursuit of equity in education and beyond.
A native of Dunn, North Carolina, William studied at Wake Forest University before joining Teach For America as a 2005 Mississippi Delta Corps Member. He began his career teaching 4th–5th grade English language arts, social studies, and science at Julia L. Armstrong Elementary School in Greenville, MS. From there, he went on to serve as principal of Carver Elementary School in Indianola, MS, for six years, where he championed student growth and teacher development. He now serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Sunflower County Consolidated School District.
As a Fellow, William launched a Social Entrepreneurship Project designed to tackle the urgent teacher shortage facing rural regions like the Mississippi Delta. His project focuses on developing comprehensive programs and specialized training to prepare local citizens to enter the teaching profession—strengthening schools while also building stability and continuity for students and families across the region.
